With fall fast approaching, I’m getting excited about all of my autumnal favorites. The classic fruit and spice pairing in my Mexican Cinnamon Apple Oatmeal (a.k.a. Avena con Canela y Manzana) is an ideal flavor combo to help start the morning.

Ingredients

Step 1 – Bring water, cinnamon sticks, and cloves to a boil in a saucepan. Remove from heat, cover and let steep. Discard the cinnamon sticks and cloves.

Steps 2-3 – Add salt and oats to the cinnamon tea and bring to a boil, uncovered. Lower heat and simmer, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. – Add milk and simmer until creamy.

Step 4 – When the oatmeal is ready, using the large holes of a box grater or shredder, shred the apples directly into the pan and stir well.

Step 5 – Serve in individual bowls, adding more milk. Sprinkle with cinnamon, then sweeten with a drizzle of maple syrup. Enjoy!
